FAQs
What is Lean RAMP?
The Lean Research Administration Model of Practice (RAMP) is a pioneering approach to transforming research administration by applying Lean methodology in a structured manner to research administration.
With support from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) GRANTED initiative, Lean RAMP seeks to create efficient, scalable research support systems.
We seek to ensure the successful adoption, implementation, and sustainability of Lean research administration practices across a set of partner institutions ranging in size, structure, and organization from low-resource emerging research institutions (ERIs) to R1 universities.
It responds directly to the Lean RAMP survey we deployed that surfaced widespread pain points in research administration—particularly around inefficiency, overly complicated processes, and siloed operations.
What is Lean?
Lean is a growing, universal approach to eliminating waste and improving performance across many industries. It challenges organizations to proactively illuminate problems (waste) and performance issues from the customer's perspective, identify the underlying processes impacting performance, and commit to continually improving those processes. Lean’s core tenet of Respect for People implores organizations to ensure every employee contributes and commits to continuously improving the processes they work to deliver.
What is a Lean Management System?
A robust Lean Management System (LMS) promotes a culture of rapid learning and improvement at all levels of the organization. Such a culture creates an organization that is not just responsive but one that identifies and navigates challenges proactively, efficiently, and successfully.
LMS is an intentional leadership development program that develops Lean leaders across the organization and motivates and sustains a Lean culture. Among other things, the LMS program emphasizes developing leadership skills; aligns and strengthens pillar metrics, balanced scorecards, and visual management boards; and stresses accountability at all levels of staff to meet departmental and organizational goals.
